Expert: Resale timeshare 'a practical alternative' in recession
Although scores of people seek to buy timeshare vacations every year, the current economy may put a damper on some of their plans. However, industry experts say resales may be the way to go.
The benefits of the resale market can make the difference between owning a timeshare or not this year because they take the timeshare concept – an affordable luxury vacation in a desirable location every year – to a new level.
There is "tremendous value" to be found in the secondary timeshare market, according to Dean Floreani, a Canadian timeshare industry expert, because timeshares are considered an investment in vacation lifestyle rather than real estate investment.
For that reason, buying from another owner typically means buying at "yesterday's price," and therefore cheaper than comparable new offers in a given year, he adds.
Floreani also suggests that using the services of a timeshare professional can be beneficial in navigating the complexities of the market, especially for the first-time buyer.
According to the American Resort Development Association, the timeshare industry generated $67 billion for the U.S. economy in 2007 and remains a popular vacation option with American leisure travelers.
