Movie release puts Kauai in spotlight again
The blockbuster movie South Pacific was recently re-released on Blu-ray Disc by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to commemorate the movie's 50th anniversary, and Kauai tourism authorities hope it will attract more tourists to the island.
South Pacific is a story about forbidden love during World War II, and the breathtaking coastlines, lush vegetation and picturesque waterfalls of Kauai's north shore served as the movie's backdrop when it was made in 1957-58.
Kauai's chief and enduring appeal lies in the fact that its north shore has remained largely unchanged since then, according to Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau.
"Kauai's allure and spectacular natural beauty helped tell the story of South Pacific," she says, adding, "Travelers coming here today will enjoy many of those same qualities."
She further adds visitors will recognize many of the sights from the movie's pivotal scenes, such as Mount Makana's towering twin peaks in Haena, Lumahai Beach and Hanalei Bay, featuring historic Hanalei Pier, crystal blue waters and one of Hawaii's most famous surfing spots.
Hawaii is also a top destination for timeshare owners.
Recently, construction work has begun at Disney's first Hawaiian family resort at Oahu's Ko Olina that will feature a combination of hotel and timeshare options.
It is scheduled for completion in 2011.
